What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

Are you dissatisfied with your life? Bored or unsettled with your work? Maybe you don’t know what to do for work in the first place?

I get it. I am still after decades as an adult putting things together. You know what? I think I am finally on to something.

First though I have to put issues around money aside. Needing to make money always clouds things for me. Sure we need money to pay our bills. Happiness and satisfaction are pretty disconnected from money for me. Not only that I have a bad habit of immediately looking to see if I can turn whatever I am thinking about into a source of income. That can happen it’s just helpful to not go to monetizing or potential jobs too soon.

Lately I have really started looking at what activities have brought me satisfaction, contentment, and maybe even inspired moments of pure happiness. Also, I have really been paying attention to what activities I can focus so intently on I lose total track of time.

What Do You Love Doing?

What common threads do you find in the activities you love or obsess over? I definitely have a pattern in my life of really enjoying helping people learn. This week I had an opportunity to do a little training at work and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Considering I have been doing tutoring or teaching in one way or another most my adult life this isn’t surprising. Some other examples from my life:

  • Flight Instructing,
  • Math & Software Tutoring,
  • Teaching Tango,
  • and Home Schooling.

Each is fairly different from the other. The common thread though is helping other people learn a complex topic.

What is it you love doing or learning about at this time in your life? How is it both the same as and different from other interests yours? How about things you used to be interested in when you were younger? Give yourself permission to explore deeply.

Find people who are doing what you love for money. They could be business owners or employees for a company. Ask questions and take notes.

What Do You Lose Yourself In and Forget The Time While Doing?

  • Are there any activities you do which absorb your attention so thoroughly you lose all track of time?
  • What are you happy to devote your free time to when you are not at your job?
  • What do you read about or watch on your phone during breaks at work?

When I am writing or debugging software I can easily spend an hour and feel like I have only spent a few minutes few minutes. Anything which absorbs your time like this is something to notice. Reading is another activity I enjoy in my free time. Along with reading, learning, especially in the field of personal development.

Notice What You Notice

These are the kind of questions which can get you started figuring out what you want to be when you grow up. Becoming more self-aware is a choice you can make anytime you are ready. Just start paying attention to how you feel when you do something, anything really. Discover the clues to what you are meant to do.

Be ready for the shifts. As you grow and expand your awareness what you are meant to do today may in fact really be a stepping stone to the next thing. And the next, and the next, until it’s time to leave this earthly experience.

Maybe you weren’t really supposed to “grow up” in the first place? Maybe we have it all wrong? Work is really supposed to be play!
